About Straight Flight

Straight Flight is a Certified FAA and EASA Repair Station based on the northeast side of Centennial Airport (KAPA) in Centennial, Colorado. Our facility includes three 18,000-square-foot hangars with 28-foot doors and fully equipped back shops for metal and composite fabrication, avionics repair, and paint work. Backed by five FAA Class Ratings and a FAA Production Certificate, we deliver trusted expertise and innovative solutions for aircraft maintenance, repair, and parts manufacturing.

Founded in 1986 by Ernie Smith, Stan and Jill Mounce, and Mel Eisamen, Straight Flight began as Rocky Mountain Straight Flight. In 1990, the company relocated to Centennial Airport, marking the start of a period of steady growth that led to the construction of our primary hangar in 1999 and the transition to the name Straight Flight.

By 2007, leadership had transitioned to Ernie Smith and Stan Mounce, and that same year we became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sierra Nevada Corporation. Two years later, we expanded our capabilities to include composite structure repairs. As an FAA Part 145 Approved Repair Station, we hold multiple ratings—including Class 1 and Class 3—allowing us to service all aircraft under 12,500 lbs, whether metal or composite.

In 2022, we added Avionics services with corresponding FAA ratings and also hold a FAA Production Certificate (PMA), enabling us to manufacture and distribute certified metal and composite parts for our STCs, as well as fabricate replacements when OEM parts are unavailable.

Today, with over 70 team members, Straight Flight continues to expand our expertise and look toward the future of aircraft maintenance and innovation.

Honoring Our Founder: Ernie Smith

Ernest “Ernie” Louis Smith IV was more than just the co-founder and General Manager of Straight Flight, he was the heart of our company. For 38 years, Ernie poured his heart, skill, and unwavering dedication into building Straight Flight from the ground up, shaping not just a company, but a community.

Ernie began his aviation journey in 1981 as a certified Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Technician, later becoming an FAA Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR). His technical expertise, particularly with aircraft like the Dornier 328, was matched only by his steadfast commitment to safety, quality, and integrity.

But Ernie’s true legacy goes far beyond aircraft. He was a leader who cared deeply about his people, cultivating a culture of trust, loyalty, and excellence that continues to define Straight Flight today. His tireless energy, generosity, and passion for aviation inspired everyone who had the privilege to work alongside him.

Though he is no longer with us, Ernie’s vision and values remain at the heart of everything we do. His legacy will forever guide our path forward.
